What Causes Dandruff?

Causes Dandruff

Harsh Chemicals - Certain hair products can cause a chemical or contact dermatitis, which will cause the itchy scalp to become dry, irritated, and flaky. Dandruff may also be the result of using too many products or harsh shampooing too frequently, or using hair dyes and hair straighteners that can cause an inflammatory reaction.

Eczema – If you are prone to having Eczema, you may also be prone to dandruff or itchy scalp.

Scalp Psoriasis – Psoriasis causes an accumulation of thick, silvery scales on your scalp.

Not Washing Your Hair Enough – If you do not wash your hair and scalp often enough, it may trigger dandruff because too much oil can accumulate on the scalp. Washing your hair every day or at least every other day is essential.

Seborrheic Dermatitis – Too much sebum or oil production may be the reason for your dandruff. In severe cases it will progress to a condition known as Seborrheic Dermatitis. This can spread beyond the scalp onto your face and behind the ears. It can be very itchy and noticeable. Seborrheic Dermatitis can also be hereditary.

Yeast Fungus - Malassezia Furfur is a fungus that can be present on the scalp. An overgrowth of this fungus can also cause Dandruff.

Dry Skin – Dry skin is one of the most common causes of dry itchy scalp. If your arms and legs are dry and flaky, chances are that your scalp will be too.

Dead Cell Shedding - Excessive shedding of dead skin scales on the scalp can cause Dandruff. Excessive flaking may also be caused by an underlying illness or condition, such as Scalp Psoriasis.

Extreme Cold – Cold temperatures can dry out your scalp just as it affects the skin anywhere else on the body. Cold, dry winters can bring on dandruff or make it worse.
